The dumpsterumentary will be a documentary in which my roomate James and I (Dan) will be only eating food that we find in dumpsters around Reno,NV for a month. I want to illustrate how much food is wasted, and
to talk about why this happens, and to show that we feel that this is pretty ridiculous.

bob and my little brother went last night, brought home tons of bread products and juice. we're going tonight i think, gonna try an earlier approach to see if we can get there before the security guard shows up.

had our first night out filming, things were good at trader joe's, not so good at the scolaris, there was a security guard. we must have looked a little suspicious cruising in with our headlights off, we saw him and drove around to the front of the building, he drove by us really fast and tore back around to the back of the building. at trader joes though we got some good shots, next time we'll have two cameras and it will be more dynamic. we found tons of cashews, some pita bread, some almond butter (yeeha), some avocados, and some other stuff. Then we came back to the house to do some brainstorming, we're gonna need a bunch of help to accomplish all the stuff we're hoping to do. it's 1 am, i'm gonna go to bed, first i'll eat some more cashews, oh we also found some very good green salsa. hooray for free food.

we're gonna start filming soon, things have been set back due to crew scheduling issues. last night we were in San Francisco for a concert and we stopped in Berkeley to check the Clifbar dumpsters, we dug through both of them, and found only one cookies and cream Clifbar. We did get to talk to some weird old guy though, he brought out a broom from his house to help us clean up.

The email that started it all...
Date: 5 Feb 2002 01:03:05 +0000 From: "dan gingold" To: drewish@katherinehouse.com and other people Subject: How would you like to help with the Dumpsterumentary? OH yeah!
hello everyone. I have spoken with some you about this project, but for many of you this will be the first time you've heard of the dumpsterumentary. the dumpsterumentary will be a documentary in which James Dardis (my roomate) and I will be only eating food that we find in dumpsters around Reno for a month. I want to illustrate how much food is wasted, and to talk about why this happens, and to show that we feel that this is pretty ridiculous.
I'm writing to all of you because this project will require a bit of help. We will be shooting a lot, much of this at night, and we will need help with that, including transportation, lighting, audio and some other things. Also it would be an effective and interesting addition if we were able to calculate the retail price of the food we gather, which would involve trips to grocery stores to check prices. aside from this, we will need assistance with graphic design, publicity if we decide to submit it to some film festivals, music, research, ect..
If you have interest in becoming involved with this excellent project, please write me back. As much as i would like to have some sort of planning meeting, I know that all of us have very hectic work and school schedules, and that it would be very difficult to coordinate a time. I will ask in subsequent emails about times that folks would be available, with luck we'll be able to meet before this project begins. tenative starting date is the 28th of February.
hope to hear from all of ya, Dan Gingold
